I had a banner day yesterday- I got to run the South Branch Grasse (NY) at an unheard-of high level. It blew my mind. Huge drops with a ton of water going over them. Combination of wild fun and gut-churning terror.
2010 RoundUp
Here’s a list of the rivers/whitewater runs I got on in 2010. Parentheses indicate multiple runs, asterisk indicates a run i did for the first time.
Vermont: Locust Creek, Patterson Brook (7), SoRo Wave, New Haven Ledges (13), Middlebury Gorge (8), Big Branch (3), Green River*, First Branch White River (2).
New Hampshire: Upper Baker River (3), Pond Brook (3), South Branch Baker, Mascoma Downtown (5).
New York: Raquette River Stone Valley, Ausable Chasm (2)*.
Quebec: Rouge River (3), Lachine Surfing, Taureau.
I’m planning a headwater-to-mouth run of the White River after ice-out, hopefully within the next month. I’ll start upstream of Chelsea, VT at the highest kayak-able part of the First Branch of the White, and paddle down to the confluence with the Connecticut River at White River Junction, VT. Hoping for a high flow, warm day, and fast boat to get it done under 10 hours. I’m looking forward to this as a way to get the lead out and get limbered up for the spring creeking season.
Coming up April 2nd is the New Haven Creek Race near Bristol, Vt. There is a $1750 cash purse this year so there should be a good turnout of hard-hitting boaters. Carrie says if I’m not coming home with money I may as well not come home at all. Guess I’m in it to win it.
